Does Obesity and
Diabetes Interact?
Understanding who causes whom
Some say obesity causes diabetes. Others say diabetes causes obesity.
This expert says neither causes the other.
Let’s see what causes obesity, and what causes diabetes, and judge for
ourselves.
Also let’s see what harm comes to us having to live with either.
Living with Obesity
Being overly fat, or obese, is acceptable by many as it is, what it is.
Ok, let’s see how tight the shoes really fit.
The University of California Berkeley, one of the highest rated medical schools
in the USA, states that a major report in March 2008, from the World Cancer
Research Fund, found a convincing connection between excess weight and cancers
of the colon, rectum, esophagus, pancreas, and kidney, as well as breast cancer
in postmenopausal women. Obesity has also been linked to other cancers. Though
the risk is greater with obesity, extra body fat, especially around the waist,
increases the chances of developing cancer, states Berkeley.
Obesity is a very simple health condition. It is due to what we eat, and how
we eat. Dr. Rena Wing, Dept Head of Obesity and Diabetes at Brown University
Medical School, states that it is a result of eating more than what is needed
for our physical needs. If we are couch potatoes, sitting in front of the TV
a lot, we don’t need much to eat. If we are a lumberjack, or coal miner,
we need much more to eat.
Why do we eat more than we need?
-
We are enticed by bigger portions.
-
We want to look bigger in others eyes.
-
We believe in parents, “clean your plates, there are people starving
in Europe or Africa”
-
We just don’t think about it.
-
We socialize at our lunches, and dinners, and don’t want to leave
the table.
-
We enjoy snacking, everyone does.
-
We want to keep up with others, especially at home.
-
Don’t have a clue.
-
Add your reasons.
If you can relate to several of these, start with the section called “Portion
Control for Diabetes” at the www.winningthefightagainstdiabetes.com website.
Living with Diabetes
For an understanding of the cause of diabetes, again go to the website. It
is also an eating problem, but the cause is eating the wrong foods, many unknowingly.
Obesity is eating too much, or too fast as you have found out, and diabetes
is the quality, not the quantity of food. Diabetes causes blindness, amputations,
kidney and heart failure. The “Bad”Foods” that can cause
diabetes are identified in my book.
The answer is that neither is the fundamental cause of the other.
In Identifying the Causes of Obesity and Adult Diabetes, we can begin to eliminate
them?
Taking advantage of knowing obesity causes.
Now that we understand obesity, we can begin to reduce or avoid it. We can
eat less and create a better match with our physical needs. We can recognize
today’s enemies as they are the “bigger is best” companies.
Now available are food products that are bigger portions for old favorites,
and we think that they are cost bargains. They are until the health costs begin,
and some disrespect for our appearance comes. We can eat slower, and change
what we do in other ways too.
Taking advantage of knowing adult diabetes causes.
Now that we know that mashed potatoes, white bread, and other foods that have
been modified from healthy foods, we have a simple remedy. Stop eating them.
Also knowing that stress contributes to the cause, we can practice stress reduction
techniques, and knowing that exercise can reduce extra glucose from our bloodstream,
we can start using our bodies more.
